SINGAPORE: Singapore’s male and female paddlers have both won gold in the team events at the Myanmar SEA Games, and the team now needs just one more gold to meet their target of three gold.
Zhan Jian opened for the men’s team in the finals against Thailand, and despite being pushed hard by his opponent, prevailed 3-2.
There were no such problems for Li Hu in the second singles match, as he won his fixture 3-0.
Chen Feng and Zhan Jian then teamed up to overwhelm their opponents 3-0 in the doubles.
The whitewash gave Singapore’s paddlers their first gold at the Games.
It was a similar story for the women’s team, who also faced Thailand in the finals.
Yu Mengyu took just 15 minutes to beat her opponent in the opening singles.
It was a more even encounter in the second singles — Lin Ye took the first game before dropping the second. But she rallied to win the encounter in four games.
Lin returned with Zhou Yihan for the decider in the doubles.
And despite losing the first game, the pair bounced back in the next three games to secure Singapore’s second gold of the day by beating the Thais 3-0.
Singapore now moves into the individual competitions.
Head coach of the women’s table tennis team, Jing Junhong, is optimistic about adding to the team’s medal haul.
Jing Junhong said: “I can’t guarantee it 100 per cent, but we do have a strong chance. If Yu Mengyu can repeat her performance today, it bodes well for the singles.
“As for Isabelle Li, her performances in the group stage were very impressive. Hopefully, she can give it her all in each of her singles matches.”
