SINGAPORE: It was a great start to the new year for some first-time parents in Singapore whose children were born on New Year’s Day.
Baby boy Averett Sim was born at the stroke of midnight of the new year, making him Singapore’s first baby in 2014.
His parents — Madam Jacqueline Tan and Dr Sim Wee Beng — said they are thrilled that their firstborn is safe and healthy.
One year ago, the couple were still dating.
And they spent New Year’s Eve 2012 playing card games, which Madam Tan remembers losing.
But this year, the couple’s luck has taken a turn for the better.
Dr Sim said: “Of course we were very eager to meet him (Averett). Very glad he was equally excited to meet us as well, and chose to come out early.”
But Averett’s arrival was not the only reason to celebrate for the proud mother and father.
The baby boy also received a month’s supply of diapers — and other gifts — from Thomson Medical Centre, where he was born.
Giving hampers and offering other perks to babies born on New Year’s Day depends on the practice of each hospital.
Over at the Singapore General Hospital, a baby girl was born less than a minute after midnight.
Her mother Nur Asilah Ali and father Iswardy Ithnain are mulling over a name for her.
And now that their baby has arrived, Mr Iswardy said it means “a new year, a new day, and a new beginning for us to start a family”.
Other hospitals also reported their first babies delivered in the new year.
Raffles Hospital said its first New Year baby was born at 12.02am.
At KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the first baby of the year was born at 12.45am, while the one at National University Hospital was born at 1.23am.
