DAVE Galera didn’t make much of an impression in his Octagon debut after dropping a unanimous decision to hometown fighter Royston Wee in the undercard of UFC Fight Night 34 last Saturday at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
All three judges had identical scores of 30-26 for the 27-year-old Wee, the first Singaporean to ever don the UFC gloves.
Galera started out aggressively in the opening round and threw a kick but Wee countered with a takedown and slammed him to the canvass. Wee pinned Galera well down on the floor and landed some elbows and strikes that opened up a cut on Galera’s right eyelid.
The second round was no different and Wee capitalized on his strength and took the 35-year-old Filipino down and held on to him there.
In the third, Galera landed a few strikes but Wee wisely took him down to the ground again, doing the same routine in the first two rounds.
Apparently out of frustration, Galera threw an illegal upkick that landed flush on Wee’s head. The referee gave a dazed Wee some time to recover and took a point away from Galera because of the illegal move.
Wee remained unbeaten and improved to 3-0, while Galera suffered his first career loss and dropped to 5-1.
Although there are a few Filipino fighters that have fought in the UFC, the likes of Brandon Vera, Mark Muñoz, Eddie Yagin and Philippe Nover, Galera was the first ever homegrown Filipino talent to fight in the famed Octagon.
Galera trains with Team Lakay inn Baguio City, in which he is teammates with Eduard Folayang, Honorio Banario, Kevin Belingon, Geje Eustaquio and Rey Docyogen.
