Singapore welcomes 2014 with countdown parties across the island

SINGAPORE — Singapore welcomed 2014 with a bang last night, with parties around the island that were full of song, dance, quirky celebrations, and spectacular displays of fireworks.

Instead of painting the town red, party-goers at Sentosa’s Siloso Beach painted it neon pink, yellow, and orange as they ushered in the New Year.

The beach extravaganza was just one of the countdown parties happening across the island.

At the Marina Bay area, people thronged The Promontory, where a waterfront bazaar as well as free performances by local and international acts kept party-goers entertained.

Performances by British boy band The Wanted and Taiwanese-American Singer Wang Lee Hom, who performed at MediaCorp’s party over at The Float at Marina Bay, were big crowd-pleasers.

The ticketed event, which drew a crowd of almost 18,000, also celebrated 50 years of television.

And for the first time, a specially-designed LED display lit up the Ocean Financial Centre during the countdown to midnight.

The fireworks display is a highlight of any countdown party and the Marina Bay area is one of the most popular locations for people to catch the sky lighting up in a kaleidoscope of colours.

The eight-minute display at Marina Bay thrilled audiences including Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean.

And over at Fullerton Hotel, guests were showered with 13,000 balloons at the stroke of midnight.
