Use your power for Earth Hour 2014

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay area will plunge into darkness from 8.30PM to 9.30PM on March 29, for what is expected to be the world’s largest ever Earth Hour event.

Spider-Man is the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour and the cast and crew from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, including stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, will lead the event.

“Earth Hour is a movement that is driven by the power of the civic society and the ordinary man on the street. This year we are inspiring everybody to use his/her power and become a Super Hero by driving a positive change for the planet,” said Ms Elaine Tan, CEO of WWF-Singapore.

Considering Singapore’s massive carbon footprint and urban consumption patterns, WWF- Singapore has launched a huge campaign for four key action initiatives and is urging everybody to pledge and commit to turning their air-conditioning up by one degree, switching to LED lighting, using fewer plastic bags and taking shorter showers.

Traditionally, the lights out activity has been a symbolic act of one’s commitment to saving the planet and conserving the environment.

Individuals, educational institutions and public and private organisations are encouraged to pledge their support for WWF-Singapore’s sustainability efforts at the pledging microsite: http://earthhour.wwf.sg

Singapore organisations take part in Earth Hour’s efforts to save the environment

Shangri-La Hotel joins in Earth Hour’s efforts to save the environment by addressing global water scarcity.

Guests staying at the hotel on March 29 can participate in the hotel’s water conservation project by not changing bedroom and bathroom linen on that day. The public can also pledge to save water on the hotel’s Facebook page in a virtual bid to save 9,000 litres of water by achieving 1,000 “likes”.

Various departments of the hotel have also pledged to save water by doing the following: reducing ice usage at The Line’s seafood counter; installing water restrictors on wash basins and kitchen taps; reducing water usage while watering gardens; implementing a water irrigation system, and using water- and power-efficient dishwashing equipment.

At Royal Plaza on Scotts, lights will be turned down in the hotel’s lobby between 8.30pm and 9.30 pm on March 29, leaving only minimal emergency lights for guests’ movement. The hotel’s signature candle installation will also be lit with environmentally-friendly soy candles.

Guests are encouraged to join in the movement by switching off electrical devices and lights that are not in use. Lights will also be dimmed at the award-winning buffet restaurant, Carousel. Patrons will be invited to participate in Earth Hour by lighting the soy candles placed on their tables.

NTUC FairPrice has extended its support for Earth Hour this year by pledging $15,000 towards WWF’s Earth Hour 2014 initiatives.

On March 29, all non-essential lights such as signage light boxes and façade lighting at over 120 FairPrice and FairPrice Finest supermarkets, FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets, will be switched off from 8.30pm till closing time, or till 7.30am the next day for 24-hour supermarkets.

In addition, over 160 FairPrice Xpress and Cheers convenience stores will switch off refrigeration lights between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on that day. Business will operate as usual during these periods.

Tips on saving energy

Lutron Electronics Co. Inc., the world’s leading lighting control specialist, urges Singaporeans to go beyond just turning their lights off for this year’s Earth Hour on March 29.

Save more energy with these simple solutions:

- Dimming lights by 50 per cent will reduce electricity usage by 40 per cent and make light bulbs last 20 times longer.

- Reducing the light level according to one’s needs to enjoy the perfect ambience while saving energy at the same time.

- Making full use of existing natural light by using a wireless daylight sensor, which will adjust the level of electric light, and save up to 20 per cent of lighting usage.

- Installing automated shades will reduce heat gain from sunlight and save up to 10 per cent in air-conditioning energy consumption.

- An occupancy sensor can automatically adjust lighting conditions in rooms, which will save up to 15 per cent of lighting usage.
