Two jailed for misappropriating money from casino

An uncle and nephew pair were sentenced to nine months’ jail each for misappropriating money from Marina Bay Sands casino.

SINGAPORE: An uncle and nephew pair were sentenced to nine months’ jail each for misappropriating money from Marina Bay Sands casino.

Investigations showed that in mid-2011, 40-year-old Ong Teck Meng lost a lot of money as a result of his gambling habit.

To recover his losses, he approached his 25-year-old nephew Chin Jun Cheng, who was working as a croupier at the casino.

They conspired to misappropriate money through two main modes of operation.

Ong would pass chips of a larger denomination to Chin to exchange for chips of smaller denominations. Chin would then overpay Ong.

Another way was for Ong to place bets with Chin at the table where Chin was performing dealer duty.

Chin would deal advantageous cards to Ong, which would result in Ong winning his bet.

Ong would then convert the chips into cash and stash it in the boot of his car.

From time to time, he would remit some of the money to his family in Malaysia.

Chin would also remit part of the money to his girlfriends in Taiwan and Thailand.

By late January 2013, surveillance staff at Marina Bay Sands casino suspected the pair of colluding to scam the casino and put them under live monitoring.

They were detained by security staff and arrested by police on January 25, when the staff spotted two incidents of Chin overpaying Ong.
