SINGAPORE – InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), one of the world’s leading hotel companies, was recognised for its commitment to environmental practices, with two properties in Singapore picking up the prestigious ASEAN Green Hotel Award 2013 yesterday.

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport and Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium were among ten hotels named in Singapore to receive the accolades at the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2014 held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

In addition, four IHG hotels in Singapore were recognised in the 2013 annual Benchmarking Assessment Report by EarthCheck, which tracks the environmental impact resulting from the operations of each property. InterContinental Singapore, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium and Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre each earned the EarthCheck Silver Certification 2013 for performing better than the Best Practice Level in energy consumption, exceeding the minimum industry requirements by the following:

· Crowne Plaza Changi Airport by 26.8 per cent
· Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium by 22.1 per cent
· Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre by 16.1 per cent
· InterContinental Singapore by 7.8 per cent

The four hotels also received the Singapore Green Hotel Award 2013, with InterContinental Singapore bagging an additional Water Efficient Building (Silver) Award which acknowledges the hotel for its water efficiency measures in its operations.

Clarence Tan, Chief Operating Office, South East Asia and Resorts, IHG said, “Responsible business practices underpin the core of our business. Over 2,500 of our hotels are currently enrolled in IHG Green Engage, an online platform designed to help us manage and minimize our impact on the environment. As a company we helped develop a standard industry approach to measuring carbon footprints and were the first to launch a carbon calculator in IHG Green Engage. The award wins are evidence that we’re on the right track and we are committed to continue innovating to drive even better sustainable hotel standards.”

The annual ASEAN Green Hotel Award, now in its fourth year, recognises environmentally-conscious hotels that have shown excellence in green practices. These hotels have also performed exceptionally well under the ASEAN Green Hotel Standard – one of six ASEAN Tourism Standards that the ten ASEAN member states consider essential for promoting ASEAN as a quality single destination. The strict 11-point judging criteria, and mandatory conditions that hotels need to meet, covers areas including solid waste management, energy and water efficiency, air quality management and toxic chemical substance disposal.  The ATF is an annual event held to promote the ASEAN region as a single, attractive multi-faceted destination that thrives on intra-regional travel and cooperation among various sectors in the tourism industry. This year, the eight-day event was held at the Borneo Convention Centre in Kuching, Malaysia which saw over 1,600 delegates comprising ASEAN Tourism Ministers, exhibitors, international buyers, local and international media as well as tourism trade visitors.
