Team Singapore have swept all four gold medals on offer in table tennis, after completing a double victory in the men’s and women’s singles competition on Saturday at the SEA Games in Myanmar.

SINGAPORE: Team Singapore have swept all four gold medals on offer in table tennis, after completing a double victory in the men’s and women’s singles competition on Saturday at the SEA Games in Myanmar.
The paddlers had also dominated the men’s and women’s team events on Friday.
Singapore’s Zhan Jian reached the final after beating the Philippines’ representative in the last four.
Zhan beat Vietnam’s Tien Dat Le 4-0. He won gold without dropping a single game in both the singles and team competitions.
Tien Dat Le had earned his place by defeating Singapore’s other singles competitor, Clarence Chew.
Chew settled for a joint-bronze.
It was an all-Singapore affair in the women’s singles final, with Yu Mengyu claiming Singapore’s final gold after a 4-0 victory over Isabelle Li.
The more experienced Yu proved too much for 19-year old Li, who lost all her games.
Li took the silver, repeating her achievement from the 2011 Games in Palembang.
The men’s and women’s table tennis team had won two gold medals on Thursday.
Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin watched Singapore’s paddlers at the Wunna Theikdi indoor stadium.
And he expressed words of recognition for the whole contingent, including coaches and athletes who have not won medals.
He said: “It doesn’t detract from all the efforts that have been put in. And this is where I think, perhaps it’s good to also look at the whole effort of Team Singapore.
“And the win, for example by the table tennis team or billiards, I think, is also representative of all the efforts put in by all the athletes, and that’s something I think is something that we should be tremendously proud about.”
