“Notre Dame de Paris” musical opens in English in Singapore

SINGAPORE: The French musical “Notre Dame de Paris” is back in Singapore and this time, in English.

It opened on December 17 at Marina Bay Sands MasterCard Theatres, and will be showing till January 12, 2014.

Based on the classic novel by Victor Hugo, the musical first opened in Paris in 1998.

Since then, it has been staged more than 4,000 times in 20 countries, and holds the record of enjoying the most successful first year as a musical production according to the Guinness Book of Records.

The last time the musical was performed in French in Singapore was in 2006.

The two-and-a-half hour performance has also been translated in other languages, such as Russian and Korean.

Notre Dame de Paris tells the story of a hunchback’s unrequited love for a gypsy woman.

The musical’s English lyrics were written by lyricist Will Jennings, who also wrote the award-winning song “My Heart Will Go On” for the movie “Titanic”.

Director Gilles Maheu said: “We’re very pleased now to bring the English version, because also I think that Singaporeans are more at ease in English, so it’s the first time we’re doing it in English in Singapore. We’ve done it in London, in Russia, in Italy, in Japan, in many other countries.”

Matt Laurent, the actor who plays “Quasimodo”, said: “It’s just an amazing show, an amazing set, and when it’s all together… there’s something kind of magical that’s happening with Notre Dame de Paris that we just can’t really explain ourselves.”
