Aide Iskandar recently expressed confidence that his Singapore Under-23 side will do well at the Games, but it appears that our readers do not share the same belief
The SEA Games are coming up and the talk has been about how Singapore are gunning for a first-ever gold medal in this year’s edition.
However, Goal Singapore readers do not share the same confidence as Singapore Under-23 coach Aide Iskandar, who believes the team can live up to expectations, despite being drawn in a tough group along wide defending champions Malaysia, Laos, Brunei and Vietnam.
A majority 36.8% think that the Young Lions will not even make it out of the group stages, while 29.8% were slightly more optimistic as they indicated a semi-final exit. But there was a positive response from 20% of fans polled, as they believe the gold is possible, while the rest (14%) think they will reach the final but fall short of being champions.
Singapore will start their campaign against Laos on December 8, before Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia follow. The other group consists of Indonesia, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Thailand and Cambodia. All Group A games will be played in the Zeyar Thiri Stadium in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, while the YTC Stadium in Yangon will host all Group B matches.
Malaysia have won the last two editions, while Thailand won the other four since the tournament was made exclusively U23 in 2001.
