Stones say 'hi' to fans with no tickets

It is true that you can’t always get what you want, as legendary British rockers The Rolling Stones sang. But sometimes you can get pretty close to it – even if it is for a mere 30 seconds.

That was how long the band showed up yesterday at the outdoor Event Plaza at Marina Bay Sands to say “hi” to thousands of fans who did not have tickets to their concert in the Grand Ballroom.

The fans, who were waiting to watch a live simulcast of the concert, were surprised by the band’s appearance.

Many rushed to the side stage as frontman Mick Jagger took the microphone to wish the audience a good evening and enjoy the show before heading inside to the Grand Ballroom to start their sold-out concert.

Ms Noraisah Rahim, 26, was among the outdoor crowd and she appreciated the gesture.

The yard coordinator at an oil field said: “I was not expecting that at all. It might be a free event for us but we’re still their fans. So it’s really nice that they dropped by to say hi.”

The Stones’ 14 On Fire tour was projected live at the Event Plaza in high-definition on a 14m-wide LED screen.

It is believed to be the first large-scale simulcast for a concert here.

The gig was the Stones’ first here since they played two nights at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in March 2003.

Earlier yesterday, at the same venue, there was a free concert featuring veteran local bands such as Heritage and Jive Talkin’.

It was part of the open-to-the-public music festival, Marina Bay Sands Rocks Singapore.
